The foam cannon deal... I used to think the same as you when I thought that you don’t need one of the high dollar “professional” cannons but I just made the switch from a $30 Amazon cannon to a chemical guys bigmouth foam cannon and it is so much better. Foam is thicker and I only have to use a fraction of the soap I used in the old one. It will save much product/money in the long run and I will never go back.

  • Halliparta
    Halliparta

You don't have to use ph neutral soaps with ceramic coatings, they are very chemical resistant. People here use strong alkaline degreasers or hydrocarbon solvents to pre-wash the salt and shit off during winter. You wouldnt get it off with normal soap

    • Halliparta
      Halliparta

@The Detail Geek Yes, they tell you to use their own soaps, but thats mostly for liability and marketing reasons. Almost every coating is advertised to be chemically resistant to 3-14 ph or so. If the coating degrades from that, its a bad coating. All the professionals around here use stronger chemicals on the pre-wash stage. Also, there are alkaline soaps which are wax safe. For some reason people in the US are afraid of non-ph neutral products. Hell, even you tap water most likely isn't ph neutral.

    • The Detail Geek
      The Detail Geek

I’m sorry, but that’s not true at all. Yes they are more chemical resistant, but to properly maintain the coating and ensure you aren’t causing pre-nature degradation of it, you should always use a pH neutral soap. If you don’t believe me, feel free to do some research....almost every coating manufacturer will tell you the same thing 👍🏻

Maybe time to replace the nozzle on the foam wash canon...or shake your foam wash bottle before fill the bottle on the canon....check the measuring markers on the bottle as you might be diluting the solution too much....check the solution if you have recently restocked the manufacturer may have changed dilution ratios, if it isn't your equipment check your connections on your pressure washer you might need to unscrew the metal connections as the threads on the screw might be loose or worn...equipment failure due to ageing from use or the nozzle tip is what I would check first, check the pressure on the washer itself it might not be at its optimal performance, solution is diluted...

I have a ceramic coated car. I wash it by first foaming it up with an iK 9 pro foamer, then rinse it, and finally follow up with contact wash and final rinse. I use a worx hydroshot because a I don’t have access to a garden hose. I blow dry the car with a leaf blower then find some soap residue on the surface. Could it be I need a more powerful pressure washer? I use only di water by the way.

Do you toss the micro fiber towels when you use them for the ceramic or use them for something other than paint.

    • John Lamb
      John Lamb

@The Detail Geek To be honest, Im terrified of scratching my powdercoated wheels to the point where I haven't actually agitated them until this past wash. My buddy also has PC'd wheels from the same shop and his are scratched to hell. Granted he doesn't clean them properly and his are also gloss black which apparently is the most prone PC color to scratch (apparently because of its composition). I should have specified that I don't reuse said towels on a smooth finished surface, but rather use them to wipe down undercarriage or dirty engine components. My apologies if anything I said between this comment or the other one have come across negative at all. As I said in my other comment, unfortunately text doesn't always convey tone correctly.

    • The Detail Geek
      The Detail Geek

@John Lamb Yeah again, I will not ever risk scratching rims either. You do you man, but I'll do what the manufacturers of every coating tell you to do, and that's just toss the towel. It's not worth my time or the risk for a $5 towel...

    • John Lamb
      John Lamb

@The Detail Geek Just sharing some of my own limited experience here.. When I coated my wheels in Gyeon Rim, I did not wash the MF towels immediately and, yes, they definitely hardened up. For shits, I tossed em in the washing machine and they did soften back up but they're definitely not as soft as before. I figured I would keep them for dirty jobs like undercarriage or engine bay. Fast forward to recently, I applied a different ceramic coating and immediately washed the towels and they came out soft. Granted, I will re-purpose them to dirty jobs like I previously mentioned. Just food for thought

    • The Detail Geek
      The Detail Geek

@John Lamb Speaking from experience, the silica hardens up fairly quick and I truly don't think that detergent is going to break it down. For such a small expense of 1 towel, why risk scratching your paint?

    • John Lamb
      John Lamb

@The Detail Geek I've heard you can toss them into a solution of (microfiber) detergent immediately after use so that they aren't ruined. In my eyes, it would be worth trying to save and re-purposing for none painted surfaces. Just one man's opinion though

After every wash do you spray out with only water? To avoid any material lingering in the mechanism. You cam also separate the pieces where liquids and soups can get stuck and clean it. If im not mistaken there is a video on Chemical Guys explaining how to clean the inside. Hope this helps.

Thanks Tim, I’ll definitely have a look at those videos. The odd thing is that when I first got the foam cannon, it was working perfectly and I couldn’t have asked for more...which leads me to think that it may just be something as simple as it being clogged with dried up soap as another person suggested. Either way though, I will be exploring all avenues to fix it....😄😛

    • Tim Pirtle

@The Detail Geek Getting foam is not that hard at all, but nearly impossible without the right equipment. Check out Pan (Pan the Organizer) and (ObsessedGarage) for tips and equipment.....also checkout the expensive vs. cheap video from auto detailing podcast...I can attest that the cheap gun/foamer works very well for the money You really need more GPM from your P washer, better soap and a better gun foam gun

    • The Detail Geek

    • Chris Hayes
      Chris Hayes

It's a small brass piece that's inside the metal body of the cannon. Unscrew the quick connect and use a small flat blade screwdriver to remove the orifice. Most cannons come with a 1.2mm orifice but a 1.1mm will produce more foam. They cost around $10 and well worth it. Several vids on ESwindow about this. Hope it helps. Subbed to your channel today.

To get thicker soap with a foam cannon, make sure the +/- knob is turned all the way to + and if that's still not doing it, then add more soap to the bottle than you normally would. Sorry if these are really obvious tips, that's what I do with my foam cannon.

    • The Detail Geek
      The Detail Geek

+Mike0429 Appreciate the tips Mike! For some reason even doing that didn’t get it as thick as I’ve had it before....this last time I used it I added a bit more soap than usual and a tad less water and did manage slightly better results, but it’s definitely still not where I want it. I’ll have to keep fiddling around and testing! 😕
